SAGE BENCH 2011
The Sage bench was my first full-scale design project in my first year at Sheffield Hallam. A brief was set by my tutors to design seating for a public space using 100% steel only, being from Newcastle I chose the Sage music theatre as I have always appreciated the architecture and the building aesthetic structure. Looking at the basic shape of the Sage I drew a rough sketch. using the inside skeleton as inspiration for ideas I developed it into a suitable design for seating. Making a 1:5 model helped me understand sizing and the feel of the design, preparing me for the final full-scale model. With 42 welds to do on my final design I had to learn quickly how to use the MIG welder and picked it up quickly. I was really proud of my outcome as it fitted well with brief and was comfortable to sit on.
